One glaring inconsistency was evident in the disparate treatment of foreign medical graduates and doctors from Indian Medical Universities. While the former had to undergo the MCI Screening Test, the latter enjoyed an exemption from this requirement. Simultaneously, the global variations in the quality of medical education and significant disparities between government and private institutes prompted the realization of a need for comprehensive reform. Surveys highlighted these discrepancies, underscoring the necessity for a standardized assessment to ensure the competence of the entire medical workforce entering the Indian healthcare industry.
After extensive deliberation, the Government of India enacted the National Medical Commission Bill on September 25, 2020. This landmark legislation led to the dissolution of the MCI and the establishment of the National Medical Commission (NMC) in its stead. A pivotal measure taken by the NMC was the replacement of the MCI Screening Test with the National Exit Test (NEXT), heralding a new era in medical education and professional evaluation. This transformative step aims to bring uniformity, transparency, and a stringent quality check to ensure the competency of medical professionals contributing to the Indian healthcare system.
